Excel v Accounting Software |
Recently I had the opportunity to meet small business owners and chatting with them revealed that many of them are using a series of complicated excel spread sheets to tackle their GST requirements and quarterly BAS duties.
I find it fascinating that people deliberately make their life harder than it needs to be!
Lots of people are not familiar with excel formulas and functions so they often ask knowledgeable friends to create a working worksheet. If for any reason the formula doesn’t work properly it results in disaster as the reports aren’t correct.
If you are in business, having accounting software is not a luxury item! It’s not expensive and there are different products on the market that will suit your needs. Using accounting software is an important part of organising your office.
They are integrated, cater for all sorts and sizes of enterprises from micro to large ones and they are capable of completing complicated tasks with just a push of the button. They are all programmed to do the BAS and some versions also do payroll.
I understand that even the thought of operating accounting software sends chills down your spine but you don’t have to do it for yourself. Thank God for the book keeping profession!
We all complain that there’s no time for working on the business, well here is a tip for you, hire a book keeper to do your books and spend your newly found time on building your business.
Three of my newest clients came to me with the same problem. They all had the same system – let’s call it the excel system.
They are busy professionals, and as it happens they are all architects.
At our initial meeting they all confirmed that they are sick of the way they are operating and they needed time to work on the business not doing the books.
I explained what I could do for them but I don’t think they really understood it at the time. What they were all looking for was someone take over the burden without considering using the accounting software I mentioned earlier.
Now, they are all happy customers as I have opened their eyes to options that they didn’t think of. Of course they couldn’t do it by using the spreadsheet system but with accounting software they could.
Getting great compliments from satisfied customers boosted my ego big time!
Accounting doesn’t have to be boring but it’s certainly compulsory. The motivating part is when you look at specific reports that speak your language they are easy to understand. The business dealings are translated into numbers that can be confronting but can also open your eyes to what needs to be fixed or what is being done right.
By using an accounting system you’ll adopt a working administration system that makes your life ten fold easier.
Don’t just take my word for it; consider the example of the three architects!
